Membrane bioenergetics -- page 83.
Bacteria and archaea have different types of membranes. The cell wall in archaea is very different from the cell wall in bacteria.
Despite all the differences (in the cell walls and the internal cell membranes, chemiosmotic coupling is universal.
Nick Lane argues that the membrane in the last common ancestor must have been different from all modern membranes, different from all membranes in extant bacteria and archaea -- page 85.
Nick Lane is looking to create a more "predictive biology." This is an interesting statement: Richard Feynman dabbled in biology for one year some years after WWII, but gave up on biology after only one year because he felt it was not "predictable."
