Henry VIII -- Wives And Children

Henry: four heirs -- Edward VI, Mary I, Elizabeth 1.

 

Mary 1: Tudor
Mary, Queen of Scots, 1542 - 1587: Stuart -- only surviving legitimate child of James V of Scotland; great-granddaughter of Henry VII off England had a claim to English throne -- her cousin Elizabeth kept Mary, Queen of Scots at bay. This Mary, Queen of Scots at one time claimed Elizabeth's throne. Ultimately found guilty of plot to kill Elizabeth, and Mary executed. After 18 years, Elizabeth finally had enough of her.

Another great-granddaughter of Henry VII, Jane Grey -- a cousin of Mary I / Bloody Mary -- claimed the throne when Edward VI died but within a fortnight shee wwas back as a prison of her Catholic cousin Mary 1 who had claimed the throne as her own.

Henry: second in line to throne.

Older brother, Arthur dies. Had been married to daughter of "FerdinaneandIsabell," Spain, Catherine of Aragon; betrothed since the age of 2. Teenage couple married 1501. Arthur dies of a sudden illness some months later. Henry is now in line for the throne and is betrothed to his brother's widow.

ONE; Henry takes the throne, age 17, 1509, and marries Catherine of Aragon six weeks later: three sons, three daughters; only survivor from infancy, Mary, (later Mary 1, "Bloody" Mary), born 1516.

TWO: 1520: infatuated with Anne Bolyen, a member of his wife's entourage. Fallout with the pope and Cardinal Wosley.

1533: with help of Thomas Cromwell, divorces (annuls) marriage to Catherine of Aragon, marries Anne Boleyn. Daughter Elizabeth.

Henry excommunicated, 1533. Henry's other daughter, Mary, declared illegitimate, and Elizabeth was named his rightful heir. Elizabeth born 1533.

Anne Boleyn married three years, 1533 - 1536, then divorced, beheaded.

THREE: 1536: Anne was pregnant/miscarries. Henry injured in jousting competition. Turns attention to Jane Seymour. Anne executed for treason and incest.  Marries Jane Seymour -- dies in childbirth, a son, the future Edward VI (1536/1537).

FOUR: 1540: with death of Jane Seymour (childbirth) free to marry. This fourth marriage like his first marriage, a political marriage to Anne of Cleves, her brother the ruler of a Protestant duchy in Germany. Marriage lasted only a few days before Henry had it annulled

FIVE: 1540 - 1541: then married Catherine Howard, but two years later, 1540 (?) beheaded for treason and adultery.

SIX:  Catherine Parr, outlives Henry VIII. 1512 - 1548. Married 1543 - 1547.
