The Federalist Era.
Federalist Era: 1788 - 1800.
Federalists generally controlled Congress and were supported by presidents George Washington and John Adams.
Deepening support for nationalism, a stronger Federal government under the US constitution:
the era began with ratification of the US Constitution; and,
ended with the Democratic-Republican Party's victory in the 1800 elections.
Ratification of US Constitution:
those who supported: the Federalists
those opposed: anti-Federalists
Federalists won in all but two states
Congress shaped the federal judiciary with the Judiciary Act of 1789.
Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton's economic policies fostered a strong central government.
Hamilton's policies divided the US along factional lines, creating voter-based political parties for the first time.
Hamilton's opponents coalesced around Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.
Hamilton's followers: the Federalist Party
Madison's followers; the Democratic-Republican Party
