No matter how much you have read of ancient Greece, Sparta, Athens, the Trojan War, or Helen of Troy, if you haven't read Bettany Hughes' Helen of Troy, you haven't completed your ancient/classical Greece reading program.
As usual, it's another great book that I just stumbled across -- this time at the Harvard Book Store in Cambridge, Massachusetts (no connection to the university).
I have said many, many times, the best writers are from Ireland, Scotland and England. Again, another example: the author received her degrees in ancient and medieval history at Oxford University.
This book is absolutely outstanding. It is one of those books that I want to read very, very slowly; I never want it to end. Paperback editions in the states cost about $20. At Amazon.com, probably a bit less.
